Knittingdodo’s knit rants

Yarn, Needles, An Extinct Bird……What More Do You Need?

FO: Men’s Grey Socks December 28, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — knittingdodo @ 11:55 pm

Uncle John requested some house socks in Dallas Cowboys colors for Christmas. And, with a size 12 foot, I was grateful he wanted slippers. That meant I could use worsted weight yarn!

I want to say that this pattern was not very good. I got gauge perfectly, but the socks were way too narrow for a man. They would fit a woman fine, but not a man. Of course, I noticed this after I’d already finished the first and was halfway done with the second, so I had to rip out and start again.

Instead of adding stitches, I went up a few needle sizes and, while I was still worried they’d be too narrow, Uncle John assures me they fit nicely. He even sent me a picture to prove it, see?

FO: Tell Me A Tail Bookmarks

Filed under: Uncategorized — knittingdodo @ 11:28 pm

I’ve started a bit of a tradition. Every year I knit a bookmark for each of T’s teachers. Of course, I may be changing that when the girls are in high school and have 6 teachers each. But, for now, there were only 2 and I was able to knock them out pretty quickly. And, you may notice I used the same sock yarn that I used last year for her teachers. In fact, I finished off the skein, which always makes me happy as there’s no wasted yarn.

Since I’d made a hat for Justin, I thought I might as well make on for his fiance, Ashton too. And, since she’s young, thin, and beautiful I figured she’d need a beautiful slouch made out of sock yarn.

I’ve only got the one picture, sorry. I had planned to take pictures of everyine wearing their gifts on Christmas day, but….

FO: Turn A Square 1 & 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — knittingdodo @ 11:10 pm

My uncle’s roomate, David, and my brother are both the type of men who look good in beanie caps. Which is good because beanies are so darn easy to make. (It still makes me a little sad that Ron looks so incredibly bad in a beanie. He’d probably get a lot more handknit items if he could wear the easy, quick stuff.)

So, this year I went looking for a new beanie to make for each of them. I wanted something quick and easy, that used the yarn I already had in my stash, but was also fun and interesting enough to keep me into it. (I realize beanies only take a few hours, but if it’s a few hours of utter bordom, that can seem like a lifetime.)

I hadn’t really planned to make them the same pattern, but when I saw the Turn A Square by Jared Flood, I knew that was the perfect hat for them both. And I had some Cascade 22 and Noro in my stash! ( I don’t have really anything to say here, but I ended the last two paragraphs with a parenthetical thought, so I figured I should keep up the tradition.)

Anyway, here is David’s hat:

It was originally supposed to be my brother’s, but when I showed it to Ashton, his fiance, she said it looked too girly with the purple stripe at the bottom. That wasn’t an issue for David, so I slotted it for him and got to work on one for Justin…one without purple.

It’s not a very good picture, but you can see that I changed up the stripes a bit with this one.

Project: Turn A Square by Jared Flood (Rav Me!1) (Rav Me!2)
Yarn: Cascade 220 and Noro (unfortunately both were missing ball bands, so I don’t know the colors)
Needles: US 6 & 7
Date Started: (1) November 25, 2009 (2) November 29, 2009
Date Completed: (1) November 25, 2009 (2) November 30, 2009
Mods: (1) I did 2×2 stripes instead of 2×3 as the pattern states. It was an accident, I just didn’t read the pattern all the way through. (2) I did 2×5,4,3,2,1,1,2,3,4,5 stripes.

FO: Swallowtail Shawl

(K, this is the first of many Christmas FO posts, so be prepared)

At my church, we do secret pals. For those of you who don’t know what that is, you pick a name out of a hat and once a month you get that person a surprise gift of about $15 or so.  At the end of the year, you reveal yourself.  This past year, 2009, was the first year and we are continuing for next year. Anyway, I picked a perfect pal. Her name is Becky and she’s a very close friend of mine. She’s also a knitter, which makes her just that much more special. ;o) Being a knitter, she would have been the perfect recipient of knitted gifts, and I would have been thrilled to knit something for her every month.

However, since there are only 3 or 4 knitters in the whole church, and Becky and I are the only ones who knit regularly, I had to save my knitting for the last gift of the year, otherwise she’d know it was me right away.

Her favorite color is purple, and she’s a shawl type of person, so I knew way back in Feb. what I wanted to make her. However, I put it off all year and then had to scramble to get it done in time. I think I finished just a little under a week from when I was supposed to give it to her. What was it, you ask?

And she loved it! Which was good because knitting with lace weight yarn is a lot of work!

And The She Was Two…

Filed under: Uncategorized — knittingdodo @ 5:31 pm

Exactly two years ago, December 28, 2007, I was doing this…

Christmas 07 & Delaey's birth 046
(Please excuse how I look. I’d had almost no sleep and a terrible, terrible cold.)  This is Ron and me about 20 minutes before I went in to give birth to D.

Christmas 07 & Delaey's birth 057

And about 2 minutes after she was born.

So, today my baby turns 2. When did that happen? Where did the time go? I swear just yesterday I was pregnant.

In that time, we’ve had some scares…

(That’s her apnea monitor on the table. She was on that for her first year)

And we were here way too often…

But, mostly the past 2 years have been filled with lots of love and fun:

You poor thing.
